Our Story
Kebun Kopi Tani is a small family-owned plantation in Wolopaku-Kebesani-Detukeli, Ende, Flores,Indonesia. Our story begins with a simple man’s dream to bring change into the life of his family and his community in the 1980’s.
“Started with a simple man's dream to bring change into the life of his family and his people.”
The Founder
Kebun Kopi Tani is named after its founder, the local farmer Matheus Tani, as a way to honour him.
He started the plantation in the '80s together with his wife Yuliana Ela, making it the oldest coffee plantation in the area around the village of Wolopaku. He bought 100 robusta saplings from an acquaintance in the next village and planted these on his farm. In the following years, he bought more arabica and robusta coffee saplings.

The Succesor
As the time passed Matheus Tani can now no longer work at the plantation due to his old age, the plantation is now in the hands of the second generation. Their son, Stefanus Sungkono has been managing the plantation since 2012, and continues the family's tradition of coffee cultivation.

‘We hope to inspire a new generation of future coffee producers.’
2023
Matheus Tani was more than a farmer: he was a visionary, passionate about farming, the well being of his family and the future of his village. Opposed at first by one of his brothers, he planted even more coffee saplings on his farm. Eventually, his determination brought a shift in the mindset of the villagers. Slowly but surely they also started growing coffee and today nearly every villager has their own coffee plantation.
Three years later he founded and became the chairman of Kelompok Tani Kema Sama,a small farming cooperative that most villagers have joined.
The Innovator
In 2022 Susan, one of his daughters founded Wolopaku Coffee and started organizing coffee plantation tours and tasting. The first tours were given in 2023. She grew up in a coffee farmers family and often helped her parents with the coffee production so coffee was a big part of her life. After her junior high school she then went to study tourism in the nearby town. Her tourism background and frequent trips abroad, enabled her to understand the importance of coffee and coffee tourism business.
Sustainability
Embracing agro-tourism, we strive to connect travelers and locals and share knowledge about coffee and it's journey from cherry to cup. During the tours you will learn all about coffee, from planting, harvesting, processing and roasting.
Part of our mission is to encourage younger generations on Flores to embrace the coffee farming sector, in order to increase high quality and sustainable future coffee production. We do this by offering young students internship positions at our plantation and inviting secondary and high school students to a study tour program.
We care about our village and the environment around us, therefore we also aim to raise awareness on the impact of plastic waste in the village and around our coffee farms. By collaborating with Trash Hero Indonesia we educate our children from the village about the importance of waste management and organize weekly waste pickup sessions to make a positive difference for our community.
